In 1971, amidst the misty hills of Sri Lanka, Mr. A. P. D. Abeyrathne planted the seeds of what became a remarkable legacy. With the purchase of the Uva Halpewatte Tea Estate & Factory, and alongside his wife, Mrs. Nalini Rajapaksha, he set out to craft something more than just fine tea, he built a family-driven dream rooted in quality, integrity and vision.
This venture laid the groundwork for Vella's growth, expansion, and diversification into new sectors, establishing a strong legacy in tea, leisure and adventure.

In 2009, we expanded into tea exports, driven by a vision to deliver garden-fresh, single-estate teas to global markets under the esteemed Halpé Tea brand. Halpé Tea now proudly exports Ceylon tea to over 30 countries, solidifying its reputation for unparalleled quality.
Vella entered the leisure industry in 2012 with the establishment of 98 Acres Resort & Spa. This eco-friendly mountain resort, with charming chalets made from recyclable materials, is one of the top luxury hotels in Ella. In 2016, it was named the Best Luxury Mountain Resort in the World by the World Luxury Awards and has since received numerous accolades for the luxury offerings.
In 2016, Ceylon Tea Supermarkets opened its first retail outlet, offering high-quality products from various Ceylon tea brands. Since then, the brand has steadily expanded its presence across the island. The opening of the fifth outlet in 2025, in Hiriketiya marked a significant milestone- Vella’s first venture into Sri Lanka’s southern coastal region. Today, Ceylon Tea Supermarkets proudly continue to share the excellence of Ceylon tea with tea lovers from around the world.
In 2019, Vella ventured into adventure tourism with the opening of The Flying Ravana Adventure Park – Sri Lanka’s first ERCA-certified adventure facility.
In 2020, Vella expanded its leisure portfolio with the launch of Kiri Kōpi in Ella. Since then, the brand has grown with new outlets in Colombo and at The Flying Ravana Adventure Park, bringing its signature charm to a wider audience. Known for its vibrant atmosphere, indulgent breakfast and lunch menus, and rich, specialty coffee, Kiri Kōpi has become a go-to cozy spot for both locals and travelers seeking high-quality meals and a warm, welcoming café experience.
Building on the momentum, Vella further expanded the leisure portfolio in 2021 with the introduction of two luxury villas. Villa Lé Maas Tota, set within a 30-acre private estate, and Walaa Kulu, a boutique three-bedroom escape designed for an intimate, high-end accommodation.
In 2022, Vella launched Ravana Pool Club in Ella, Sri Lanka’s first international pool club. This Balinese-style mountain club is Vella's first BOI-approved investment, offering panoramic views, unique architecture, and exceptional entertainment. Recognized by the World Luxury Restaurant Awards in 2023 for its excellence.
In 2024, Vella expanded its adventure arm by launching the Amber Swing at Ambuluwawa, Kandy. It’s become a must-visit spot for adrenaline seekers offering breathtaking views near the iconic Ambuluwawa tower.
